UALR will partner with two other state universities, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and Arkansas State University, Jonesboro, to create a new three-campus research initiative aimed at converting research discoveries into commercially viable products and dramatically advancing Arkansas’ knowledge- and technology-based economy. This project is part of the Arkansas ASSET (Advancing and Supporting Science, Engineering and Technology) Initiative. The National Science Foundation has awarded $6 million for the first two years with another $3 million for the third year. The State of Arkansas has provided $1.5 million matching fund for the first year with possible matching of $3 million more for the second and third years. Total funding of $13.5 million is expected over three years.
Dr. Seshadri Mohan, Chair, Systems Engineering Department, serves as the Principal Investigator for the project and works with a team of team of researchers that includes Dr. Hussain Al-Rizzo, Dr. Radu Babiceanu, Dr. Guoliang Huang, all from Systems Engineering Department, and Dr. Srini Ramaswamy, Chair, Computer Science Department, Dr. Remzi Seker, and Dr. Kenji Yoshigoe, all from Computer Science Department. The team includes two Ph.D students Daniel Rucker and Subramanian Vimalathithan (Vimal) and a Post Doctoral researcher Sithu Sudarsan and two more postdoctoral candidates yet to be recruited.
The Arkansas ASSET Initiative has three overarching goals. To accomplish these goals, numerous activities and milestones have been developed.
Goal 1: To build a unifying statewide infrastructure platform within the two projects of Arkansas ASSET Initiative and improve research capabilities to support integrated research collaboration that will enhance Arkansas’ national academic research competitiveness.
Goal 2: To establish an entrepreneurial environment and translational mechanisms to drive industry relevant outcomes and ensure regional economic development.
Goal 3: To create new outreach methods and expand existing programs to increase the Arkansas science, engineering and technology student-pipeline with special emphasis on minorities and women to address the workforce issues of regional and national relevance.
The funding received will facilitate the installation of new infrastructure including the following:
• An anechoic chamber for antenna characterizing and propagation measurements
• A systems engineering and wireless sensors testbed
• A computing cluster

Systems Engineering Senior students Rodney Arnold, Tara Lancaster, and Daniel Rucker carried out the 2006 – 2007 Systems Engineering Capstone Design Project sponsored by Deborah Schwartz and Ron Mathieu of Little Rock Airport Commission and mentored by Systems Engineering faculty members Dr. Radu Babiceanu, Dr. Hussain Al-Rizzo, and Dr. Seshadri Mohan. The objective of the project was to design a flexible next generation airport system that reduces customer waiting time at the airport, integrates multiple independent systems that do not currently work together, and increase the utilization of airport resources that can create the potential to increase revenue generated.
