Information Science is the field closely associated with computer science and information management. It is primarily concerned with the structure, representation, management, storage, retrieval and transfer of information. Information science deals with ways in which a human experience can be represented, stored and retrieved at a later time. It deals with innovative techniques for presenting information in ways that can be understood by different audiences. Information Science encompasses the technical issues regarding information flow, database systems and data security, information quality and assurance, network reliability and network security, computer systems and computer system administration.
The Department of Information Science seeks to expand human and technical capabilities through information in a world where information is of central importance to personal, organizational, social, political, technical, and economic progress. The Department prepares students for professional and managerial careers in information science, information systems and information management. The Information Science undergraduate degree program emphasizes design and development of information processing systems. It focuses on the transformation of data into useful information. The master's degree program in Information Quality (MSIQ) is the first such program in the nation and continues to produce leaders in the field. Minors in Information Technology as well as in Bioinformatics help round out the department's offerings. Additionally, advanced students advised by the department's faculty can obtain the Ph.D. in cooperation with the Applied Science Department and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock/University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Joint Bioinformatics program.
As a component of the Donaghey College of Engineering and Information Technology (EIT) of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, the Department of Information Science is committed to fostering the use of information technology in the State of Arkansas and the nation.
